Like waves in the ocean,

All things are doomed to impermanence and death

The life of every being is as ephemeral as a bubble.

They believed it was essential never to forget this.

Although they were both mothers, there were in fact many differences between Alina and Léa. As well as the greater possibility that her daughter would die soon, Alina had to confront another huge threat: that she would live for many years and she, Alina, would be obliged to care for her, not like someone caring for a child but like someone caring for a terminally ill person who must be fed, have their nappies changed, given medication. Someone who, despite being hopelessly ill, never quite slips away.

Any mother who is asked which was the most gruelling phase of caring for their children will answer unequivocally: the first two years, that period when children can’t do anything for themselves and must be fed, dressed, washed and changed all day long, and this was what it seemed motherhood held for Alina. Not just for a couple of years, but for the rest of her life. It is also said that those are the months during which women grow addicted to their children. Léa explained that it wasn’t merely a case of Stockholm Syndrome, as I had always thought, but rather something chemical: babies trigger in their mothers the production of a series of hormones that encourage wellbeing and bonding. I wondered if Inés was also secreting this stuff and at what age she would stop doing it.
